I received my B.Sc and M.Sc training in Computational Linguistics with a minor in Computer Science and Cognitive Psychology. My Master thesis project was a collaboration with the Center of Mind and Brain Sciences in Trento investigating the interface of language processing and visual attention using physiological methods. With the aim of applying perception research to the improvement of hearing technology and listening strategies, I joined ENRICH in 2017.

My current lab at the University College London is specialised in the neural mechanisms involved in speech processing. Research methods span from behavioural testing and eyetracking to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

In my doctoral work, I investigate pupillometry as a physiological measure of cognitive effort in response to distorted speech, in normal hearing and hearing impaired populations. A novel approach explored in my work is the application of pupillometry to the speech production in noise.

I have been working in close collaboration with researchers from the University Medical Center in Groningen who provide expertise in pupillometry research. I am also collaborating with Peter Derleth at Sonova, applying my research to hearing impaired populations. We were able to show that pupillometry research can be applied in more realistic settings, using multiple loudspeaker arrays to simulate real room acoustics.

These interdisciplinary opportunities for collaboration are unique to ENRICH and contribute largely to the success of my research, which I have been able to disseminate at several prestige conferences such as Interspeech 2019 in Graz.
