I completed my BA in Applied Linguistics and MA in Cognitive Science in Istanbul, Turkey. I am currently doing my PhD at the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands in collaboration with the Center for Speech Technology and Research (CSTR) at the University of Edinburgh. I am interested in how the human cognitive system evolved and how cross-domain plasticity plays a role in information processing. I am particularly interested in whether there is an underlying shared resource mechanism for music and language, which could help understand the nature of our cognitive system.
For my PhD project, I investigated whether musically experienced individuals may differ when processing speech in cocktail-party situations. I used both behavioral and objective measures (gaze-tracking and pupillometry) to investigate the role of bottom-up and top-down prosodic cues while processing masked speech. Through this research, I hope to provide knowledge regarding whether musical training could be used as a means to enrich speech perception in hearing impaired individuals.
