Sounding non-native: Speaking clearly in a second language

  • Position identifier: ESR8
  • Host partner: RUN

Objectives

The project examined how non-native speakers enrich their speech and the cognitive effort that this takes, and why these enrichment strategies tend to be less efficient than in native speech. We focused on Dutch speakers of English of various proficiency levels. The project evaluated efficiency of the enrichment attempts on different groups of listeners, including normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners, and native listeners of Dutch, English and Spanish (English as a Lingua Franca).

The project was supervised by Prof. Mirjam Ernestus and Dr. Esther Janse, and was carried out in collaboration with partners University College London (UK), University of the Basque Country (Vitoria, Spain) and University Medical Centre Groningen (NL).
